Lions and Foxes and a Hattrick, Oh My

Fresh off the road, the St. Louis Lions came roaring into the Foxes Den for a two game weekend series and like many early season encounters between teams, the matches would be fought tooth and nail. Suffice to say; there

side1was never a dull moment and if you missed any of the Foxes matches this past weekend, you missed too much.

On Saturday in game one, the first half went by without a goal, and though it was very hard fought by both teams, the Foxes looked to be the better side. The Foxes would reach the scoreboard first in the second half courtesy of center back Matthew Taphorn in the 47th minute. The goal came after Julian Donladson’s shot from outside the box was mishandled by the Lion’s keeper and taking that opportunity Taphorn would just tap it in.

The game did everything but slow down afterward.  A scuffle in the 79th minute had the Foxes’ Amadou Dia and Lions’ Jacob Cawsey seeing red, reducing both sides to 10 men for the remainder of the match. With a little more room to work, St. Louis rifled in an attempt past the Foxes keeper, Miguel Rosales and tying the match in the 82nd minute. Over all it was quality play by both sides.

side2Game two on Sunday started in similar fashion as it was fought as hard as the one the night prior.  Both ends produced excellent entertainment early on for the fans in attendance with St. Louis opening up the score in the 4th minute and then doubling their lead in the 37th minute.  Two minutes later, Oliver Gore would start the scoring run that put the Foxes above the opposition with a star performance.   Scoring all four goals for Real Colorado, Gore found the net in the 39th, 42nd, 53rd and 77th minutes of the match before the Lions pulled one back in the 87th minute.  St. Louis would continue to try and bounce back in the dying embers of the match, but it wasn’t enough.

With four of six points this weekend, the Foxes pulled within 2 points of 1st place Thunder Bay.  The Foxes return to action this Saturday as they take on the BYU Cougars, 7:30pm MDT at BYU South Stadium in Provo, UT.
